It is cold here in Melbourne – 15c – overcast, raining intermittently today and yesterday, the first “rain” I have seen in months, but this drizzle will have no effect on the catastrophic bushfires that have been burning since September and exploded on NYE, leaving me marooned, the Princes Highway north of Bairnsdale cut off in numerous places.
There is no indication of when the road route back to my little bunker in Merimbula will be open again.

North east Gippsland is being destroyed by fire and half a billion wildlife deaths have been estimated: an animal holocaust.

And that’s not counting farm livestock.

At least 23 people have died and about 1700 homes destroyed in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. As I write, there are still four people missing in Victoria.

More than 12 million hectares have gone up in flames nationwide – 5 million in NSW alone – and there are three months of summer to come!

As one news reporter put it: “To give some scale to what has happened here so far, international media outlets have been reporting the 2018 California fires burnt 2 million acres; the 2019 Amazon fires 2.2 million; and the 2019 Siberian fires 6.7 million.”.

It is not even peak bushfire season yet.

The word “unprecedented” has been used so often to describe the repeatedly shattered heat and climate records that the unprecedented is now normal.

LNP_Morrison_Crisis-mural_2019A Navy ship has evacuated thousands of people cornered by massive fires in and around Mallacoota, and another ship is standing off Eden in case a rescue is needed there. Merimbula, among other places, is being used as an evacuation point.

The bushfire smoke has been so thick in places fire fighting aircraft have been grounded. Smoke from Australia has reached New Zealand, causing respiratory health problems there as well as here.

LNP__Morrison_saluteOver the weekend my sister and her daughters took shelter at a friend’s home on Fishpen in nearby Merimbula, with the lake on one side and the main beach on the other, fearing fire would reach her home Pambula.

It is that close up there. It is that bad.

Meanwhile, Scott Morrison has proved his utter uselessness as a prime minister and even took this national disaster for an opportunity to produce a party political advertisement touting for donations NOT to volunteer firefighters or struggling communities but to the fucking Liebral Party!

Who the hell voted for that???
