And here we are in the 21st Century and the barbarians ARE inside the gates.
Six years of relentless opportunistic LNP dog-whistling xenophobia, Islamophobia, bigotry and racism has finally paid off: on Friday 15 March a “white supremacist” – an Aussie – murdered 51 people in Christchurch New Zealand as they prayed. Fifty people are injured. The killer went from one mosque to a second before he was arrested by police.
White supremacist, far right, nationalist, extremist, neo-Nazi, Nazi, what’s in a name: they are ALL threats to democracy as we think we know it.
Did I say six years?
Wrong!
It began in 2001 with the infamous John Howard PM, the Lying Rodent, who used the asylum seekers rescued by Norwegian freighter MV Tampa as a political football, linking them with the terrorist attacks on the Word Trade Centre towers in New York.
It is a tactic his party and his successors have used ever since.
The appalling truth is that xenophobia, Islamophobia, bigotry and racism are the political tools of choice from the current loud-mouthed interim prime minister on down through LNP ranks and Senate unrepresentative swill.
And now you can draw a straight line from all that grubby opportunistic fear-mongering and hateful rhetoric to the Christchurch bloodbath.
But already the RWNJ rewriting of history has begun as unscrupulous totalitarian scum like Obergruppenfuhrer Dutton try to crabwalk away from their history of fear-mongering and race-baiting, as if he didn’t declare Lebanese migrants should never have been allowed into Australia; as if he never – repeatedly! – lied about “African gangs” terrorising Melbournians; as if he and his colleagues have not spent years- decades – undermining Australia’s multicultural heritage and vilifying “people of colour” and non-English speaking Australians; as if he and his entire party did not a vote in the Senate supporting the noxious Pauline Hanson‘s motion “It’s okay to be white”; as if the innocent men, women and children that the LNP – yes, and the ALP – marooned in concentration camps on abject Manus Island and corrupt Nauru were not treated worse than convicted rapists and murderers; as if the current interim PM Scott Morrison did not urge his fellow conspirators to stoke sheeple’s fear of “Muslim immigration”, “Muslims in Australia” and the “inability” of Muslim migrants to “integrate”.
And no, I am not even going to mention the name of Senator Nineteen Votes who is stained with egg yolk and blood into eternity.
Bereft of any semblance of empathy, self-awareness or responsibility, thank Cthulhu the egged Senator, Dutton, Morrison and the entire LNP will be history in two months time.
But we shall not let the bastards off the hook.
We shall not “make nice” in the wake of New Zealand’s horror.
We SHALL hound and heckle these ratbags until they are thrown out of office, their names forever etched in history’s pages as the reckless, callous and contemptuous harbingers of evil that they are.
We SHALL drive the LNP and the rest of the fascists into the political wilderness from which they will hopefully never return.
Be alarmed. Be alert. Vote accordingly.
